Six Days in Paris: Day Two

Day two, our first full day in Paris, was the day that Andy presented a paper at his conference (at the Sorbonne!). He was busy with last-minute fine tuning of his work in the morning, so it wasn’t until just before lunch that we set off on our pre-conference adventures.

We began by taking a stroll through the Montparnasse cemetery. Although famous folks like Charles Baudelaire and Jean-Paul Sartre occupy plots at the cemetery, a stroll through the Montparnasse cemetery for me — unlike the more famous Père Lachaise cemetery on the north side of the city — is less about who rests within the walls and more about the quiet atmosphere. I got the feeling that our friend the crow (above) feels the same.

Andy guided me through the streets of the Montparnasse neighborhood, showing me places he used to frequent as a child during the year his family lived in Paris (his dad was a political scientist who was invited to teach at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes). We eventually ended up at the pedestrian shopping area of the Rue Daguerre, which houses many drool-worthy charcuterie, bakery, cheese, veggie, floral, etc. shops. In fact, it’s where we finally succumbed to our hunger and picked out sandwiches to carry with us until we found a perfect park bench for a picnic.

Look at that brioche! Why can’t someone in southern Utah bake brioche like this?! Perhaps it’s a good thing that scrumptious bread like this isn’t available in my neck of the woods.

After lunch we decided that it was time to head toward the inevitable… It was nearing the time for Andy to deliver his paper, so we decided to stop dragging our feet and march (or rather stroll) down through the Luxembourg Gardens toward the Latin Quarter and the Sorbonne.

Just before we stumbled upon this 17th-century statue that had been retrofitted with a modern-art installation, Andy spoke up to mention that we should keep our eyes out for something of the like. This robe (??) which encases the statue is made of looped rubber. What do you think? I thought it was kind of neat. From farther away the texture looked almost like feathers. It seemed like most onlookers were less impressed though.

Andy’s session went well. I was a proud wife (and also completely lost, as I speak next to no French). With the pressure behind him, Andy was eager to set off on more Parisian-street adventures. Along the way we spotted three more Invaders. Do you see them?

For me, the icing on the cake came late in the day when we wound our way toward the fashion mecca 31 Rue Cambon — the location of Mademoiselle Chanel’s first all-around fashion boutique. We arrived after hours when the stores on the street were closed and the crowds had departed. It was so quiet standing in front of the windows of her shop. I took my time eyeing all of the intricate details of Karl Lagerfeld’s designs and soaking up the fact that I was standing in the famous spot. It was quite the experience.

It was getting late by this point, so we decided to turn around and head back across the river toward the 6th arrondissement. Andy needed to get to bed early so that he could make the early session of his conference, and I wanted to rest up for some much more selfish business I had planned for day three of the trip. Check back next week and I’ll share all the juicy details :o)

Lots of love,

Jacqueline

  1. Love your post. I had a friend who lived just off rue Daguerre, I remember the market there. French bread and brioche are just the best in the world. It does help that French wheat is non GMO and not killed with Monsanto poison before harvest. Just saying… But I am biased. 😉

    • I totally agree! There is a *world* of difference!
Thanks for saying hi! I hope your weekend is going well.

  2. That looped rubber on the statue looks kind of like a mass of worms! Ick! But a neat idea…
I love window shopping at food and clothing in cities I visit! Looks like you had nice weather too – blue skies and sunshine! 🙂

    • Hehe. Your response to the rubber is more like what most people were saying. :0)
      Yes! The weather was *great*!
      Hope you’re doing well! XO

Awe thank you so much! I have really been enjoying your Paris posts! 😀 I bet it’s fun to go through pictures and look back on the memories you made there. I’m also glad to hear that you had a nice weekend! I was just having fun with my makeup for the holiday. I thought it would be fun to try the new blue mascara I recently got lol. My week is going lol. I hope you’re having a good one! 🙂 Xo

  4. Wonderful post!! I have to admit the bags at the beginning caught my attention but then your awesome pictures and descriptions drew me in. I agree with stashmatters that at first the looped covering looked like worms to me then when I looked more closely it reminded me of a shag rug. The statues and details in the architecture are stunning!! And of course the bakery, even though I just had a piece of pound cake with my morning cup of coffee the goodies made my stomach rumble.

  5. This is such a different view from my trip to Paris in feb! Everything looks more vibrant! And those bread look DELISH! Loving all your pics Xx

  6. The pictures you take are absolutely stunning, may I ask what camera you use? I keep toying around with picking up a Canon Rebel. A friend of my has one and I absolutely love the quality of the shots she gets but I wouldn’t mind spending a little more for quality. Anyways looking forward to Day 3. 🙂 Have a lovely weekend! ❤

    • Hi, Jen! I use a Canon Rebel and love it. We can always upgrade our lenses if we need to get fancier. Lol. But, funny you should ask what camera I’m using bc I used my iPhone 6 Plus for all of my Paris pics. I didn’t want to lug my camera around. Let me know what you end up getting!!

      • Oh wow that’s amazing! I’m in awe that your iPhone took those fantastic pictures! I’m up for a new phone in a few months and the plan was to get an iPhone 6 or wait until the 7 comes out at the beginning of the new year. I have a Galaxy S4 and it takes so/so pics.

    • I was worried about using my phone for the photos, but was pleasantly surprised. The only problem I ran into was framing. I sometimes made awkward mistakes that I don’t make when using a camera. It’s fun though to know it’ll work in a pinch!

      • That’s how I felt when we took a quick weekend trip a few weeks ago. I just couldn’t be bothered with a huge camera and two kids 6 and under. The S4 was just easier to take along for a quick shot when I wanted to. Phones these days are so great!

  7. Looks like you’re having a great time in Paris dear! Ah the fashion mecca is such a sight for sore eyes, did you get anything while shopping there? 🙂 And my the looped rubber statue got me looking twice, what an interesting piece of art! Anyhow, can’t wait to read more about your trip! I’ve been MIA for a while cuz of work but it’s always great to catch up on your travel stories Jacqueline! Have a wonderful weekend! 🙂 xo~ Lena

    • Lena. It doesn’t seem like you’ve been MIA. You’re an amazingly present blogger. I hope work is treating you well. I’ve been trying to connect with you to let you know that you’re the winner of my giveaway goodies!! Hooray!! Let’s touch base by email so that I can pop them in the mail for you!! XO

  8. Montparnasse cemetery is so going to the top of my to see list in Paris. I love cemeteries and Pierre Lachaise was very pretty but a bit touristy.
    xx Anne

    • Yes, Pére Lachaise is a feast for the eyes, but very touristy. I would say that the Montparnasse one isn’t as rich an experience, as it lacks the star quality and the charm that the hillside gives Père Lachaise, but it’s still worth walking through. It’s down to earth and beautiful in its own way :0)

      • Sounds amazing. Have you had a chance to visit the Catacombs? A bit scary for some, but an amazing experience.
        xxx

      • I haven’t, but I would love to! Do you think my 8 and 12-year-old would like it? Or do you think it would freak them out?

  9. Lovely post Jacqueline – you really capture the ambiance of Paris with your beautiful photos! Love window shopping with you – the fashion looks amazing! Also love the lovely gardens and the patisserie and brioche – it’s making me feel hungry! 🙂

    • Hehe. Every time I look at those photos I end up feeling hungry, as well! Man, doesn’t that bread look delicious?!
Thanks for saying hi. I hope your week is treating you well :o)
