Mani(cure) Monday: Cupcake Polish

It’s finals week… I don’t know about you, but when stress hits I’m looking for something sweet (chocolate preferably). LOL. This manicure using Cupcake Polish hit the spot for me! This is the most sparkly nail polish OF LIFE! Don’t judge it just on its sparkles alone though, as it has dimension as well. It appears metallic in low light and springs to life in the sun. It’s so sparkly in bright light that I would describe it as holographic. Here I’m sporting two shades of purple — Next Taupe Model (on the middle fingers) and Neither Here Noir There (on the pointer and pinkie fingers). I wore this manicure for 5 straight days with no chipping and even tip wear. These lacquers are definitely a treat for the eyes! Cupcake Polishes are 3-free and handmade in small batches in Dallas, Texas. I picked these up from a Gloss48 sale, but they’re also available on the Cupcake Polish website for $13 each. I hope you have a great week! I have two finals behind me, and two more to go. And… my pinning ceremony is on Friday! Yay! It’s been a …

Pretty Papers for Under the Tree

Pretty papers, pretty ribbons of blue. Wrap your presents to your darling from you. Pretty pencils to write ‘I love you.’ Pretty papers, pretty ribbons of blue. Pretty papers, written by Willie Nelson in 1963 for Roy Orbison, is a lovely and melancholy holiday song that has a way of playing at my heartstrings. I couldn’t help but think of this song while making a recent gift-wrap purchase from Paper Source. I decided to indulge in some high-quality craft gift wrap this year. Fueling this impetus is the sensual pleasure I feel while handling beautiful papers like these. There’s something about the way they feel in your fingers, the way they smell… and obviously, their gorgeous designs are pleasant to view from afar. In short, these papers have real character that adds depth to the holiday tradition of gift giving.   I grew up in a home where quality was valued over quantity. My mother pays (and my grandmother paid) great attention to detail. I was their student in learning mindful observation, and I’m grateful to them …

Happy Halloween Mani(cure) Tuesday: Different Dimension

Oops. It’s a Mani(cure) Tuesday this week. I was exhausted after my ICU clinical yesterday, and I forgot to upload my post! I hope you’ll forgive my tardiness. :o) Nail-polish and manicure fun is good for any day of the week though, right?!   I’m using Different dimension’s Dragula (left) and Ghostbusters (right) for the following manicure, but I wasn’t completely happy with the combination, so I tried Dragula in a second manicure as well. Ghostbusters is a pretty polish that will transcend seasons. As a Halloween polish, its iridescent sparkles give it an otherworldliness. There is an iciness quality to this polish that would make it winter appropriate, and it’s pastel enough that it would be a gorgeous spring color. And, summer is all about fun, and this polish is definitely fun!   Dragula is a gorgeous orange-and-black glitter polish. In the sun, however, Dragula sparkles like a rainbow. I tried to capture this quality in the photos, but it just didn’t come through as well as I would have liked. The combination of Ghostbusters and Dragula had more of …

September’s Feel-Good Favorites

I’ve been completely immersed in nursing school, so my September favorites list includes some things that have been helping me to get through tough days. I’m staying focused on my goal of graduation (70 days from today!) — kicking butt and taking names — but also taking care of myself, which has become a stronger priority. Nursing school will teach one the importance of taking care of one’s self! So let’s dive in to this feel-good list! Movie Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day, released in 2008, and staring Frances McDormand and Amy Adams, is such a wonderful movie! It is the quintessential feel-good movie, and a sort of Cinderella story where down-and-out Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) finds herself, by a twist of fate and a bit of desperate twisting of truths, playing social secretary to a young rising starlet (Amy Adams). The two spend one day together that leaves them both changed for the better for the rest of their lives. Fashion, glamour, love, and the richness of the things that matter most in …

Battle of the $10 Subscriptions: Birchbox vs ipsy September

Fashion ruled Birchbox and ipsy this month. For the second month in a row, I selected the specially curated Birchbox — this month’s was curated by fashionista.com. And, like last month’s Everygirl curated box, this Fashionista Forward Birchbox was pretty darn great. The theme for ipsy this month was Street Style, and it wasn’t too shabby either. Look below for details. Birchbox September 2014 Fashionista + Birchbox curated a box of September goodies with Fashion Month as the muse. I’m really happy with this month’s Birchbox items, and will be putting them all to good use! This is a collection of look-good essentials. From mascara (by Laura Mercier, no less!) to flawless skin (dr. brandt pores no more vacuum cleaner and Naobay body lotion) and hair (a rockin’ cleansing conditioner by Macadamia Professional), Fashionista and Birchbox have me covered. And, to make sure I’m on trend with fall’s metallic-eye obsession, they threw in a Cynthia Rowley silver eyeliner to boot. Laura Mercier Full Blown Volume Supreme Mascara I’m excited to try this! I love Laura Mercier products. …

Mani(cure) Monday: Dior Nail Lacquer — Mirage

Annie at Annie’s Beauty has been tempting me for months with a post now and again about the Dior Vernis Gel Shine and Long Wear Nail Lacquer.  Annie has impeccable taste, so I couldn’t resist picking up a bottle. I selected the color Mirage, a beautiful cool berry color. This polish glides on leaving a glass-like finish that is smooth and perfect after one coat. My application techniques aren’t perfect though, so I did apply two coats. The formula is nicely in the middle between a thinner polish and a thicker one, making application a pleasure. The brush tip isn’t round, but rather flat with a slightly wider and flatter brush that makes application a cinch. As you know, I’m a busy nursing student, LPN, and mom. Polishes that stand the test of time are worth their weight in gold for me. Dior Vernis Gel Shine has joined the ranks among a few others in my holy-grail collection of long-wear polishes. I wore this polish for a full seven days with zero chips. I did have …

Mani(cure) Monday: M•A•C Rebel a Chromatophoric Polish

Hello! Happy Monday. I hope your week is off to a good start! I’m wearing M•A•C’s Studio Nail Lacquer in the color Rebel in these photos. This polish is not marketed for its coloring-changing qualities, but under different lights, it does! I’m calling this color-changing quality chromatophoria, referring to the ability of some animals to change their surface color. ;0) Or, maybe Rebel is a good name for this polish, because it refuses to conform! Under yellow indoor lighting, the polish takes on a red undertone. Outdoors, its rich and cool purple undertones come to life. Here, under a different type of indoor lighting, the polish looks aubergine. This was an excellent polish that gave me five full days of chip-free wear. I’m looking forward to pulling this color back out this fall. M•A•C’s Studio Nail Lacquers are three-free and retail for $12. I hope you have a fantastic Monday. See you Thursday for a LOTD inspired by one of my favorite artists. Jacqueline P.S. Nursing-school update: I survived my first week back. It’s extra busy because …
